Exploring Architecture through “Design”
At our laboratory, we approach design not simply as a visual or aesthetic process, but as an integral part of the entire building lifecycle — from initial planning andconceptualization to construction and operation. We study how design canfunction as a collaborative, information-driven practice, particularly asemerging digital technologies continue to reshape the architectural process. Our research explores a wide range of topics, including:
・Environmental simulation and analysis using tools such as CFD,Ladybug, and Climate Studio
・VR and MR technologies for spatial evaluation and perception studies
・Industrialized construction methods, including DfMA (Design forManufacture and Assembly), PPVC, and BIM-based workflows
・Collaborative and distributed design systems, including the study ofdivision of labor and information-sharing in complex design-buildprocesses
・Construction methods, material reuse, and sustainable productionpractices, with a growing focus on upcycling and adaptive reuse
Rather than being limited to a single field, students in our lab are encouraged toidentify their own research interests and to develop logical, evidence-basedarguments through hands-on investigation and discussion. We believe innurturing the ability to think critically and communicate design intentionsclearly — skills essential for future architects and researchers. We warmly welcome international students. Those interested in applying to our graduate program are required to have either:
・Japanese proficiency at JLPT N2 or higher, or
・English proficiency at CEFR B2 level or above.
If you do not yet meet this requirement, we offer an alternative path: you mayjoin us as a research student for six months to gain experience and improveyour language proficiency before applying to the degree program.
(Upcycling)
